An Introduction To Data Security
Data is the most important entity that anyone can possess in the age of information technology. If you have the proper data, you can do anything. This is the reason that it is a must to ensure data security. Remember that almost all the types of data needs security. Most of the people think that they do not have anything on their computer that would be worth breaking in and stealing. The truth is that there is much more data in your life than you would think would be worth stealing.
The main data security standard in place as of now is International Standard ISO/IEC 17799. It lays down the principle of data security under the topic of information security. The standard not only talks about the security of data but also about its integrity and availability to the person who is authorized to get it. The standard requires that all data should be owned. There must be a person in the loop who should be responsible for that data.
Security of data is not something you can take for granted. There are a number of people who would be interested in stealing your data, colloquially called the identity theft. There are people who would steal credit card numbers and use them to make purchases on their own while you have to pay the money. Then there is your social security number. Lose your SSN and you are in for a really hard time.
There are various threats to data security. Not only hackers but internal personnel of a business are known to indulge in activities like podslurping, sneakernet, blue snarfing and thumbsucking. The last has even been used to steal classified information about the nuclear weapons of United States from Los Alamos. You must keep in mind that there is no such thing as useless data of insensitive data. If there is data, there must be someone who can use it to a negative end. There are simple precautions which you must take to make sure that your data remains safe and sound. The first thing is that you should never transmit data in an unencrypted format. This includes your email as well. The best practice is never to send data unless required. When you are sending an email to your wife, there is no point attaching a signature with your phone numbers or office designation. Naturally she would be aware of all this. In case you have to store data on any removable media like a CD or a DVD, you should keep track of every single disc that was burned. Destroy a disc once your task is done. Keep in mind that data security is not something which you can take lightly. There are severe results of negligence here.
